The People of Israel

Entering the State of Israel’s 60th year, the population stands at approximately 7,150,000 according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. This is compared to 806,000 when Israel was declared a state in 1948.

The Jewish population of Israel stands at 5,415,000, the Arab population at 1,425,000 and 310,000 ‘Others’. ’Others’ comprise mostly of immigrants from the former Soviet Union whose Jewish status is undetermined by the Foreign Ministry, but also Circassians, Druze, etc.

Israel has the 97th highest population of any nation in the world. The population of Israel comprises 0.11% of the total world population and is approximately 1/43 of the population of the U.S.

Roughly 50.7% of the population are female, meaning for every 100 men there are 103 women.

Amongst the Jewish population, 68% were born in Israel and the rest are foreign-born: 22% from Europe and North/South America, and 10% from Asia and Africa, including the Arab countries.

In the past year, the Israel population has grown by 1.8% or 121,000 people. The majority of the increase is from births (about 85%) with the rest from immigration (about 15%).

The vast majority of the population (92%) lives in urban areas, mainly in the coastal plain. Jerusalem has the highest population with 719,900 residents, followed by Tel Aviv with 371,000 and closely followed by Haifa with 270,500 residents.

There are about 445,000 Israelis living in Judea, Samaria and East Jerusalem. There are about 39,000 people living on the Golan Heights with the vast majority of its residents either Druze or Jewish.

Roughly 12% of Israeli Jews are Haredim or Ultra-Orthodox, 9% consider themselves Dati or religious, 35% traditional and 43% consider themselves secular.

28% of Israelis are between the ages of 0-14, 62% are between the ages of 15-64 and 10% are over 65 years old.

According to a study by the Central Bureau of Statistics, by the end of the year 2020, Israel’s population will number 8.2-9.0 million. This is an increase of 19%-29% over fifteen years, and a drop in the rate of growth as a result of a significant decrease in the expected number of immigrants. In 2050, the forecast is that the population will rise to 10.4 million.
